Effect of biofertilizers and their method of application on nitrogen economy in sugarcane

An experiment was conducted during 1985-86 and 1986-87 in sandy loam soil at Karnal (Haryana) to test the efficacy of two bio-fertilizers i.e. Azospirillum brazilense and Azotobacter chroococcum in combination with different doses of inorganic nitrogen (urea) in reducing the dose of nitrogen for sugarcrane crop. Cultivars Co 7717 (mid-late) and Co 1148 (late) were tried. Azospirillum was applied as sett inoculation as well as soil application while Azotobacter was given through soil alone. Results indicated that 75% N of recommended dose (112.5 kg N ha-1) either with sett inoculation of soil application of Azospirillum or Azotobacter recorded as much cane yield as with 150 kg N ha-1. However, reducing N dose got 50% (75 kg N ha-1) along with bio-fertilizers reduced the yields of cane and sugar significantly in comparison to above treatments. Juice quality was not altered by fertilizer treatments. Hence 25% of inorganic nitrogen (37.5 kg N ha-1) could be saved by the use of the these bio-fertilizers.
