Effect of extended grazing on the mothering ability of ewes

Indian Veterinary Journal 70(9): 839-842
Effect of extended grazing on the mothering ability of ewes
The effect of extended grazing on the mothering ability of ewes was investigated by comparing birth weight, weaning weight, preweaning growth and preweaning survivability of their progenies. The results showed an increase in birth weight during 1983 lambing as against 1982 lambing in each of the four breeds viz., Merino, Nilagiri, MN Cross and RN Cross. The increase in the mean weaning weight in each of the four breeds during extended grazing period (1983 lambing) was found to be significant to that of conventional grazing period (1982 lambing). Similar results were observed in preweaning growth. Of the four breeds compared, Nilagiri showed better performance in weaning weight, and preweaning growth. Thus the practice of extended grazing pattern was found to be useful in increasing the production performance of sheep by maximising growth rate and increasing survivability.
