An area of grassland was sown with Lolium perenne, Phleum pratense and Trifolium repens in 1966 and treated for 5 years with 300 kg N/ha annually and P and K as required. In 1971 the area was divided into 2 parts, (a) no fertilizer, and (b) 20 kg/ha P2O5 and 40 kg/ha K2O. These plots were further subdivided for grazing and hay production. Annual DM production declined within 5 to 10 years from 10 t/ha to <4 t under grazing and 1 t/ha under cutting in the (a) plots.
