In multifactorial trials the effects of lime at 0, 0.5, 1.0 or 1.5 times soil hydrolysable acidity, increasing rates of N, P and K, and 0 or 50 t FYM/ha on the nitrate content of sugarbeet roots and tops (1983-85), barley straw (1984-86) and fresh maize forage (1985-87) were studied. Nitrate contents of sugarbeet roots were still 2.2-2.5 times lower than the maximum permitted limit at the highest NPK and lime rates.
