Effect of fluorine ingestion on cell-mediated immune response in calves

, : Effect of fluorine ingestion on cell-mediated immune response in calves. Fluoride 27(1): 3-6

To investigate the effect of dietary fluorine (F) on cell-mediated immune (CMI) response, twenty male crossbred calves of 6-8 months of age, divided into four equal groups, were fed on diets of concentrate mixture and green corn for 20 weeks (50:50 for first 3 months and 40:60 during the later phase). The four dietary treatments differed only with respect to the F content of the mineral mixture. Treatments 1,2 and 3,4 contained dicalcium phosphate and rock phosphate, respectively. Treatments 2 and 4 in addition were supplemented with NaF so as to provide an additional 80 mg F/Kg diet. The resultant dietary F levels were 7, 79, 132 and 191 ppm in treatment group 1 to 4, respectively. The CMI response of lymphocytes determined by 3H thymidine uptake by lymphocytic cultures during blastogenesis at O' day and after 5 months of experimental feeding declined significantly with increasing level of dietary F thus indicating immunity breakdown at higher F intake.
