Effect of planting density on growth and yield of irrigated maize (Zea mays) in the Batinah Coast region of Oman

In field trials in the Batinah Coast region, Oman in 1989-90, irrigated maize Eperon and Challenger were sown at three plant densities. Grain yields in 1989 were 2.24, 3.81 and 2.56 t/ha at 24 000, 48 000 and 78 000 plants/ha, respectively; corresponding 1990 yields were 2.27, 3.48 and 2.45 t. The number of ears/100 plants decreased and lodging increased with increasing plant density in both years.
