Effect of stand density of annual rye grass on leaf area and plant productivity

The effects of Lolium multiflorum population density on leaf area, net assimilation rate, and gross photosynthesis:respiration ratio were studied in field experiments near Syktyvkar, Russia. The accumulated DM of stands with densities of 300-1200 plants/msuperscript 2 by the end of the growing season was 850 g/msuperscript 2 on average. LAI of closed canopies (CC) during the period of ear formation and flowering were 2- to 3-fold higher than those of open canopies (OC).
