Effects of crop residue and tillage practices on water infiltration and crop production

Studies with a sprinkling infiltrometer in the North Carolina piedmont showed that surface residues, either from cover crops or previous cereal crops, can increase infiltration. Water intake after no-tillage treatment was 25% to 50% greater than in conventionally tilled plots. Paratil and rip/bed treatments increased intake slightly. Infiltrometer measurements predict yield responses well due to water intake differences on crusting, sloping soils.
