Effects of honey bee (Apis mellifera L.) queen mandibular gland pheromone on foraging and brood rearing

Effects of honey bee (Apis mellifera L.) queen mandibular gland pheromone on foraging and brood rearing

Canadian Entomologist, 1242: 409-418

Newly established honey bee colonies were treated with synthetic queen mandibular gland pheromone; a slide with 1 or 10 queen-equivalents was put into the hive each day from 3 to 26 May. Compared with controls, the treated colonies showed a significant, dose-dependent increase in the number of pollen foragers and in the size of pollen loads brought into the hive by individual foragers. Brood rearing also increased but not significantly.
