Effects of roughage level and timing of roughage inclusion on performance of feedlot cattle

In a 186-day trial 108 steers, average initial weight 650 lb, were given diets comprising 85 or 100% concentrate (based on high moisture maize) (186 days), 85% concentrate for 1st 84 days followed by 100% concentrate, or 100% concentrate for 1st 84 days followed by 85% concentrate, treatments 1-4, respectively. The remainder of diets with 85% concentrate was provided by maize silage. Average gain over the whole period was 2.88, 3.01, 2.98 and 3.06 lb/day, DM intake was 16.5, 15.6, 15.9 and 16.8 lb/day and feed:gain ratio was 5.75, 5.2, 5.35 and 5.5, respectively.
