Effects of wood defects on the strength of glued structures

Investigations were made on the mutually supportive effect of the glued laminae on stress distribution in the zone near knots, in glulam beams under bending stress. Pairs of glulam beams (120x160x2140 mm) were made of spruce laminae 32 mm thick, and concentrated stresses were applied 750 mm from the supports with a span of 2000 mm. The lower laminae (i.e. those under tension in bending) had edge knots 16 mm in diameter located 120 mm from the middle of the span.
