One of the main characteristics of agricultural development since World War II has been its increased industrialization and the growth in importance of capital investment. Allied to this has been increased protectionism leading to the position where countries with an inefficient agricultural sector have become net exporters of food products, making international comparisons of productive efficiency difficult.
