Esterase isozyme patterns in three isonuclear cytoplasmic male sterile lines of pearl millet

Esterase isozyme differences in three pearl millet cytoplasms under the control of a single nuclear genotype were revealed at three stages of growth in sterile (A) and fertile (B) back grounds by isoelectric focussing. The D-2 stage of growth was found to be most suitable for differentiating cytoplasms on isozyme basis. Some isozyme bands or group of bands at specific pI values could be used for discrimination of three cytoplasms. The role of cytoplasmic diversity for broadening genetic basis of crop plants, and possibility of use of variability due to nucleocytoplasmic interactions have been discussed.
