The groundwater recharge rate and the recharge mechanism of shallow groundwater (2.5 m deep) in the semi-arid upland of the Makutapora basin in Tanzania were evaluated using the stable isotopes of oxygen and hydrogen and chloride concn in soil waters. Pressure heads were measured and wetting front movements were observed in 1990 and 1991. Water sampling was conducted from 1989-1991. The recharge rate was estimated as 53% of the rainfall using the mass balance for chloride.
