Estimation of acquired immunity to Schistosoma mansoni infection in hamsters

Journal of the Egyptian Society of Parasitology 20(1 (Supplement)): 353-359

Estimation of acquired immunity to Schistosoma mansoni infection in hamsters

Acquired immunity to homologous infection with S. mansoni was estimated in hamsters immunized and challenged by cercariae, to investigate the effect of the degree of maturation of the parasite on a challenge infection. It was found that elimination of the parasite in the 2nd infection in all cases occurred maximally before reaching the lung. This was demonstrated by the high percentage of reduction in the lung schistosomula which did not increase very much in the adult worm count.
