Estimation of the toxicity of manganese and iron ingested separately or together

Estimation of the toxicity of manganese and iron ingested separately or together
Experiments with rats showed that the toxic and embryotoxic effects of manganese and iron ingested together in drinking water differed from the effects of the ions ingested separately. In combination the metals could have an antagonistic and/or synergistic effect at doses of one-fiftieth or one-tenth of the LD50. Decreased toxicity is attributed to their reciprocal effects on transport from the digestive tract or across the placenta.
