Estimation of variance components and genetic parameters of maternally influenced growth traits in sheep

A sire and dam model and a sire and maternal grandsire model were fitted to data on birth and weaning weights of sheep to estimate the direct genetic and maternal additive genetic variances. The estimates of hsuperscript 2 for direct effects, for maternal effects and for total additive genetic effects were 0.164, 0.101 and 0.103 respectively for birth weight, and 0.076, 0.108 and 0.081 for weaning weight.
