Ethiopia: a genebank working with farmers

, : Ethiopia: a genebank working with farmers. Growing diversity: genetic resources and local food security: 78-94

In Ethiopia, farmers' indigenous landraces and their wild and weedy relatives form the basis of one of the world's richest centres of crop genetic diversity. They are subject to genetic erosion due to replacement of indigenous landraces with genetically uniform crop varieties, habitat destruction and drought. The Plant Genetic Resources Centre Ethiopia (PGRC/E) was set up in 1976 to conserve and develop existing genetic resources.
