Ethnic differences in risk factors associated with the prevalence of non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus

Non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus is 2-5 times more common in Hispanics than in non-Hispanic whites in the United States. The authors conducted this case-control study in two Colorado counties from 1984 to 1986 to determine whether known risk factors for non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus explained the excess incidence in Hispanics. There were 279 subjects with prevalent diabetes and 488 subjects with normal glucose tolerance who were eligible for this analysis.
