Euglena sanguinea Ehrenberg bloom in a fish-breeding tank (Pindamonhangaba, Sao Paulo, Brazil)

Euglena sanguinea Ehrenberg bloom was recorded in a tank at the Estacao de Piscicultura (fish-breeding station), in Pindamonhangaba, State of Sao Paulo, Brazil, for the period November 1985. Studies of E. sanguinea bloom were undertaken with the intention of observing its influence on behaviour of Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus Linnaeus). Data were registered: water temperature (27, C), pH (6,9), dissolved oxygen (4,29 mg/l), oxygen saturation (57%), electric conductivity (69,0 .mu.S/cm), ammonia (0,77 mg/l), nitrate (0,15 mg/l), phosphate (0,35 mg/l) and silica(4,0 mg/l). When the bloom occurred the water flow in tank T3 was increased in order to avoid further harm to the fish caused by the effects of bloom. When the bloom of E. sanguinea occurred, it was also observed that: 1 - chlorophyll a values were low (37,8 .mu.g/l); 2 - the fishes breathed with difficulty at the surface, the alga being attached to the gills; 3 - the fishes ate less and lost weight; 4 - out of 300 fishes, four died; 5 - when the bloom dsiappeared the fishes which survived recovered and reached a mean weight of 500 g, considered a commercial size.
