With the exception of France, Portugal and Ireland, rail travel in Europe has achieved little since 1970. However, the 1990s offer the prospects for a renaissance in rail travel in Europe, concentrated mainly on high-speed, inter-urban corridors. The EC is attempting to promote a pan-European network of high-speed, comfortable, reliable and responsive rail services.
