Evaluation of culture media and shading on container-grown Oriental pears in Taiwan's lowland

Factors influencing the growth of high-chilling Oriental pears Shinseiki were studied with a view to developing a container-bag growing system for use in the Taiwan lowlands. One-year-old plants were used in the trials. The effects of high summer temperature, which was detrimental to the pears, could be reduced by selecting the type of compost and container-bag material which would limit the temperature in the medium, and by shading.
