The direct and residual effects of 6 N rates were assessed in field trials in 4 districts of Poland in 1986-89 using root crop/spring cereal/fodder crop/winter cereal + stubble crop rotations. To obtain direct effects of N free from residual effects of N applied in the previous year, N was applied to only half the plots each year.
