Genes for a microaerobically induced oxidase complex in Rhizobium japonicum are essential for a nitrogen-fixing endosymbiosis

Genes for a microaerobically induced oxidase complex in Rhizobium japonicum are essential for a nitrogen-fixing endosymbiosis

Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America 90(8): 3309-3313

The discovery of a Bradyrhizobium japonicum gene cluster (fixNOQP) in which mutations resulted in defective soyabean root-nodule bacteroid development and symbiotic nitrogen fixation is reported. Amino acid sequences predicted that a cytochrome oxidase complex was the product of fixNOQP and that FixN was a haem b and copper-binding oxidase subunit, FixO was a monohaem cytochrome c, FixQ was a polypeptide of 54 amino acids and that FixP was a dihaem cytochrome c. All were membrane-bound.
