Genesis of a typical toposequence in the southern Orange Free State

Genesis of a typical toposequence in the southern Orange Free State

South African Journal of Plant & Soil 11(1): 54-57

The pedogenesis of a toposequence in the district Rouxville was investigated by means of seven soil profiles. A number of soil characteristics were investigated. Results indicate that parent material plays a dominant role in soil forming under these conditions. The parent materials involved are Karoo dolerite and sandstone of the Tarkastad Subgroup, which are deposited downslope in the form of colluvium. Weathering of colluvium and bedrock is argued to be primarily responsible for the characteristics of the soils.
