Genetic analysis of fruit yield of tomato

An investigation was undertaken to understand the nature of gene effects for fruit yield in tomato. For this, study on 12 .times. 12 diallel cross excluding reciprocals was done. The parents represented the important phases of tomato improvement programme in India. Six generations, namely, P1, P2, F1, F2, BC1 and BC2 of the crosses were developed. The simple additive-dominance and digenic epistatic models were employed for partitioning the means of six generations for 28 crosses. The additive, dominance and epistatic interactions were more important in the genetic control of yielding ability in tomato. Based on these findings, breeding methodology suitable to this set of material has been suggested.
