Genetic analysis of hybrid sterility in barley

Hybrid sterility was noted in crosses between Ethiopian barley and the Chinese landrace Tayeh 1. To determine the genetic control of this sterility, seed fertility was measured in the F1 and F2 of 5 crosses chosen at random from crosses between 47 Ethiopian lines and Tayeh 1. Segregation was observed for semi-sterility, partial sterility and fertility. Pollen staining indicated that hybrid sterility was not caused by pollen abnormality.
