Genetic analysis of the compatibility of 3 widely compatible rice varieties and some indica and japonica rice (Oryza sativa L.) varieties

The varieties 02428, CPSLO and Lunhui 422, with the gene S for wide compatibility, were crossed with 6 other varieties (indica and japonica types). In the F1s from 5 crosses involving one widely compatible parent, pollen fertility was normal and grain set exceeded 70%. In the F2s, grain set in most plants was in the range 60-80%, suggesting that the compatibility of parents was controlled by polygenes as well as major genes. Grain set in the F3 appeared higher than in the F2.
