Apices from seedlings of inbred lines and their F1 and F2 hybrids were cultured on MS medium containing the cytokinin benzylaminopurine at 2 mg/litre. Sensitivity to the cytokinin was assessed on the basis of the capacity of developing seedlings to form a structure resembling a swollen root in culture. Cytokinin sensitivity was found to be controlled by a single dominant gene that was designated Cyt. It showed incomplete penetrance and the lines differed in frequency of expression of the gene.
