The subject is reviewed in 2 sections: (1) basic genetic studies on the components of the photosynthetic apparatus (use of photosynthetic mutants with altered thylakoid ultrastructure, chlorophyll and pigment synthesis, ribulose-bisphosphate carboxylase expression and activity and photosynthetic electron transport), and (2) applied genetic studies for improving photosynthetic efficiency - plant breeding methods based on photosynthetic tests (variability and heritability studies, correlation studies, canopy synthesis and yield, gene action studies, heterosis studies, and stability and adaptability studies).
