Genetic analysis of wheat genotypes having different reduced height (Rht) genes

Fourteen spring wheat genotypes, having different Rht genes, and their 91 F1 hybrids were analysed for combining ability for 5 quantitative traits. Mean performance and GCA for tiller number, spike length and yield were best for genotypes having Rht2, while those with Rht1,2 showed the poorest GCA. Tall cultivars (rht) produced the highest 1000-grain weight, and tall x semidwarf (Rht1 or Rht2) and Rht1 x Rht2 crosses were better than modern cultivars for this trait.
