Genetic analysis of yield and its components in chickpea

The analysis of seven basic generations (P1,P2,F1,F2,F3BC1 and BC2) of three chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) crosses, viz. WFWG III .times. T 20, T 88 .times. Bold Seeded and NP 34 .times. P 1528-1-1, showed that duplicate epistasis and higher order interactions and/or linkages were present for pods per plant, seeds per pod 100-seed weight and seed yield per plant in all the crosses except in the cross 'T 88 .times. Bold seeded' where the additive-dominance model was adequate for seeds per pod. The presence of significant negative (i) and (j) components suggests that selection for transgressive segregants should be deferred to later generations. Heritability estimates were moderate for pods per plant, seeds per pod and 100-seed weight while they were low to moderate for seed yield.
