In this review, the genetic aspects of the subject are examined under the following headings and subheadings: inheritance of qualitative traits; genetic variability; gene action; combining ability; heterosis and inbreeding depression; genetic diversity; correlation and path coefficient analysis; stability analysis; breeding objectives (high seed yield; oil content; early maturity; insect-pests and disease resistance; plant type; improved oil and meal quality); breeding procedures (mass selection; backcross; recurrent selection; heterosis breeding); and varietal development.
