A strain of Rhizobium leguminosarum with nodFELMNTO deleted but nodDABCIJ retained was shown not to nodulate in vetch (Vicia). The deletion was partially corrected for by plasmids carrying nodO and nodFE whose structures and predicted functions differ greatly. It was proposed that the nodO and nodFE genes encoded for parallel nodulation processes which are additive during nodulation. The nodM gene was shown to encode for glucosamine synthesis.
