When 66 induced nodulation mutants of pea cultivars Frisson and Finale, derived from ethyl methanesulfonate treatment, were inoculated with Rhizobium, Glomus intraradices and G. mosseae, 21 of 45 non-nodulating (nod-) mutants expressed the myc-(1) phenotype in which infection by VA mycorrhizal (VAM) fungi was blocked at an early stage immediately after the formation of appressoria.
