Genetic and phenotypic aspects of milk yield in a herd of Caracu cattle

Fifteen thousand, three hundred and forty-four lactations from 3,934 cows from 226 Caracu sires were analyzed. The trait studied was the milk yield per lactation. The statistical analyses were made by least-squares means using the Least-Squares and Maximum Likelihood Computer Program. The model included the effects of sire and cow within sire (random), season and year of calving, and linear and quadratic effects of cow age (fixed). The overall and least-squares means were 1779.54 +- 3.92 kg and 1764.87 +- 14.27 kg, respectively. Milk yield was influenced significantly by all factors except the linear effect of cow age. The milk production means increased with the year of calving. The highest means were from cows which calves in the spring and winter seasons. The heritability and repeatability coefficients were 0.12 +- 0.02 and 0.39 +- 0.01, respectively. These results are in accord with others using native breeds.
