Genetic approaches to specific resistance of Arabidopsis thaliana against phytopathogenic pseudomonads

Genetic approaches to specific resistance of Arabidopsis thaliana against phytopathogenic pseudomonads

Workshop on engineering plants against pests and pathogens, 11-13 January 1993 Madrid, Spain: 15-21

Progress on the exploitation of A. thaliana as a model in the molecular analysis of plant-pathogen interaction is reviewed under the following headings: (1) identification and molecular mapping of an Arabidopsis resistance gene against a Pseudomonas syringae pv. maculicola isolate, and characterization of the corresponding avr gene; (2) isolation of A. thaliana mutants with altered resistance responses; (3) assessing the requirement for induced gene expression during specific resistance reactions: the ELI3 example; (4) Arabidopsis mutants showing hypersensitive response-like lesions in the absence of pathogen: cell-cell communication triggers; and (5) identification of bacterial membrane proteins necessary for delivery of avr gene function.
