Genetic architecture of yield and quality characters in groundnut

Information on genetic variance is derived from data on shelling percentage, 100-grain weight, sound mature grain percentage and pod yield/plant in the parental, F1, F2 and backcross generations of 6 crosses involving 2 cultivated groundnut (Arachis hypogaea) varieties, Co2 and JL24 (subsp. fastigiata var. vulgaris), and 3 exotic, rust (Puccinia arachidis)-resistant genotypes, NcAc17090 from Peru (subsp. fastigiata var. fastigiata) and PI414331 and PI414332 from Honduras (subsp. hypogaea var. hypogaea). It is concluded that multiple crosses (three-way crosses, double crosses and intermating of F2 segregants) may be more effective than conventional single crosses for the production of varieties with acceptable levels of shelling percentage and quality traits and incorporating rust resistance.
