Inbreeding and chemical mutagenesis were used to overcome late pod maturation and improve seed production of hybrid lucerne in Lithuania. Four varieties from the north-west region and Augune II were treated with ethyleneimine (0.03%), ethyl methanesulfonate (0.1%), dimethyl sulfate (0.03%) and N-methyl-N-nitrosourea (0.05%). Self-fertile lines were developed using 22 varieties. The best I4 lines of this type set 116 seeds/100 flowers after selfing and had a pollen fertility of 63.9-98.8%.
