This dissertation covers the effects of low-temperature on performance of the tuber-bearing Solanum from the International Potato Center's Tropical Highland and Solanum-tuberosum from northwestern Europe. A general discussion opens this thesis paper, providing an introduction, the mechanisms for obtaining low temperatures, low temperature performance in the potato, and a present investigation. Following the discussion five papers are presented which describe the various effects low-temperatures have on the potato genotypes. Biomass production, pollen germination, low temperature tolerance of biomass and pollen germination in potato clones, the relations between biomass maintenance of potato clones and their progeny seedplants growth and yield, and photosynthesis efficiency are the areas discussed. Numerous graphs and tables, and reference lists supplement the dissertation. Others interested in the genetic aspects of temperature related productivity in the potato will find this paper to be a valuable reference source.
