Genetic control of competitive ability in varieties of spring wheat

The varieties Ruso and Leningradka and F1-F3 hybrids bred with them were studied in mixed and pure stands at 3 sowing densities. Competitive ability was assessed on the basis of variation in grain number/plant and it was found that Ruso had high and Leningradka low competitive ability irrespective of crop density. In a 1:1:2 mixture of maternal parent : pollen parent : F1 the F1 showed a favourable effect of competition and the parents an adverse effect.
