Genetic control of pattern formation during flower development in Arabidopsis

In order to elucidate the molecular mechanisms by which the flowers develop from groups of undifferentiated cells on the flank of an inflorescence meristem and the cells assess their position in the floral primordia and differentiate accordingly, a set of genes was studied whose mutations give homoeotic phenotypes in Arabidopsis flowers. A genetic model to explain specification of organ identity by combinatorial action of products of these homoeotic genes is presented.
