Genetic control of the enzymatic formation of cyclic monoterpenoids in Perilla frutescens

Phytochemistry 31(1): 139-142

The activities of the two key enzymes involved in monoterpenoid biosynthesis, in various chemotypes of Perilla frutescens were examined to clarify the sites of action of two dominant genes, G and H, that are essential for the formation of cyclic monoterpenoids. GPP synthase activity was found in all chemotypes irrespective of the genotypes, but limonene synthase activity was found only in the PA chemotype (GGHH) that produces the cyclic monoterpenoid, perillaldehyde, as the main component of the essential oil. These results indicate that both genes, G and H, control separate enzymatic reactions in the cyclization of geranylpyrophosphate to yield limonene, a cyclic intermediate in the biosynthesis of perillaldehyde.
