Genetic differentiation of Scots pine subpopulations under conditions of industrial pollution

Allozyme variation was studied at 8 loci controlling the synthesis of glutamate dehydrogenase, superoxide dismutase and aspartate aminotransferase in 3 subpopulations and in young Scots pine plantations growing in the Ukraine and subject to different degrees of exposure to pollution from chemical factories. The mean level of heterozygosity was higher than Hardy-Weinberg expectations in all cases, but especially in subpopulations exposed to severe pollution.
