Genetic differences between conspecific European populations of Formica aquilonia and of F. lugubris were investigated. Formicids identified morphologically as F. lugubris were collected from the Jura mountains and the Alps in Switzerland, north and south Finland, Ireland and the UK. Populations morphologically identified as F. aquilonia were collected from the Swiss Alps, south Finland, Ireland and Scotland.
