Genetic divergence for yield and its components in wheat

Substantial genetic diversity among 40 wheat (20 Triticum durum L. + 20 T. aestivum L.) genotypes for components of fitness between and within the geographic regions existed. The cluster pattern indicated that geographic diversity was not a reliable criterion of genetic diversity in wheat. The genotypes related by their origin of region and species tended to group in the same cluster in general. There was a wide range of variation in the intracluster mean values in respect of each of the quantitative traits studied. The yield component traits viz. number of tillers per plant, number of grains per ear and grain yield contributed the most to the genetic divergence between the genotypes.
