The subject is reviewed with reference to a range of crop species under the following main headings: systems of mating and genetic diversity; spatially structured populations (interpopulation diversity, and effective population size and breeding system); historical influences on genetic diversity (population bottlenecks, and selection during domestication); and mating system and genome structure (effect of inbreeding on recombination and multilocus organization, and transposons in inbreeding species). The subject currently represents a coming together of the conceptual framework of the descent of genes within a population proposed by Malecot (1948), modern molecular biology techniques such as the polymerase chain reaction, RFLPs and DNA sequencing, and the new theoretical coalescence theory of genetic diversity.
