A brief botanical and phylogenetical description of the genus is presented, highlighting its cytotaxonomy, reproductive behaviour, distribution and importance in India and Southeast Asia. Agronomic characters of the newly released cultivars Pusa Nasdar, Co.1, Co.2 and PKM1 are briefly described.
