Genetic diversity of fruit characteristics in natural fruit tree community - Myrica rubra forest in Japan, a marvellous sample of natural conservation of fruit crops

A natural forest of M. rubra located at Ukiyama, Yahatano, Ito City in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan, was studied in 1986. Covering an area of about 150 ha, the forest contains over 1000 female trees which have been protected as a natural resource for hundreds of years. Fruits, sampled at random from 208 trees, ranged from pink to dark purple in colour and weighed from 0.6 to 3.4 g. Soluble solids content was in the range 6.5-13.0%.
