Simple applications of biotechnology, such as tissue culture and diagnostic techniques to detect diseases, have been dispersed by CIP (International Potato Center, Peru) and have proved valuable in developing potato seed programmes in developing countries. More recently, CIP has initiated genetic engineering research to improve the nutritional quality and disease resistance of potato and sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas).
